History: Welcome to the League of Legends and
"I decide what the tides will bring"Unfortunately, any history about Nami prior to her becoming the Tidecaller is unknown. It is safe to say though that the Marai consist of close-knit and secluded community like a school of fish. With the power of the moonstone protecting her home, she had a relatively peaceful childhood. They have little to no contact with the surface world of Runeterra. If Nami knew anything about it, it would be from stories the elders told, which are pretty out of date considering the Tidecaller only goes up to the surface once every one hundred years. Nami is the only Marai to date to leave the ocean for an extended amount of time. Unfortunately, she keeps running into dead ends until she heard about the League of Legends. Nami decides the most efficient method to find a moonstone is to join in. Not only is the League a magnet for political interests, but it’s a popular spectator sport for the masses. Surely she could rise up through the ranks and gain the attention of the moonstone holder.
AU History: Nami comes from a clan of Feebas in the ocean. Ever since she hatched from her egg, she lived a rather happy life among the other hatchlings and the adults. The Feebas have a myth that the relic that protects their patch of territory. With such protection, Nami became very curious about her oceanic home and those she shared it with. The only thing that stopped her from exploring much further was her clan’s biggest rule to never go the surface where the relic’s protection will not reach. The closest to an encounter with terrestrial life would be possibly Buizels but never had human contact until much later. As she grew up, she began to understand why this rule existed. While the waters bring much beauty, it can quickly change to a powerful cruel force in a heartbeat. With aggressive species like Sharkpedo and Tentacruel around, one must be able to use their advantages to survive.
It’s not a permanent protection however and this year is when its powers begin to wane. When it comes time to obtain a new relic, one Feebas will obtain a pearl from the deepest depths and trade it with a surface dweller for the relic. This one Feebas would be hailed as the Tidecaller and they clan could only wait for him or her to arrive. Nami however didn’t feel like just waiting and went to get the pearl herself.
Let’s face it. A Feebas is not a pokemon taken seriously when it comes to battles. Instead, she has to rely on her own ability to obtain the pearl from a slew of wild pokemon who would love to have a free meal. Six days later, Nami returns to her clan and they hail her as their new Tidecaller and receives the staff to go along with the title. Now she must go to the surface to find the one who has the relic to trade it. She went to the place where the stories told her the trade happens but after a night of waiting, it’s clear she can’t just wait. In that moment, she awakens her Shifter ability and is able to go land safely. So Nami now makes her way to Union in the hope of finding the relic and swears to not return back to the ocean until she does.
Canon Personality: Nami is very driven to protect her race. Instead of waiting for someone else to be the Tidecaller to come in and save the day, she took the initiative despite the popular opinion that she wouldn’t make it. Six days later, she proves them wrong and returns with the Abysmal Pearl. Everyone instantly hails her as the Tidecaller but she doesn’t let it get to her head. She never has bragged about her title in any of her spoken dialogue. Obtaining the abysmal pearl while fighting back against the deep terrors is only the first half of her duty. Unfortunately the tradeoff didn’t go as planned and that left her in a tight spot. Rather than just give up, she decides to go beyond once again and seek her answers on the surface world. As much as she misses her oceanic home, she swears never to return until her mission is complete. Nami also has a respect for the ocean. As the Tidecaller, she can manipulate the oceans for her attacks but she will remark that “we are all tied to the ocean,” and even a powerful move can backfire if used incorrectly.
Like sea and the waters that make it, Nami can be calming healing presence to allies or a tidal wave of pain heading towards her opponents. In game, Nami is an archetypical mage type warrior which means she can’t handle hits well. This doesn’t stop her from battling the horrors of the depths and the champions of the league. Nami stands her ground and her skills reflect this. She’s able to slow or stun opponents and even heal allies which can turn the tide easily and gives her or her partner a perfect striking opportunity or a chance to escape. On a non-game technical level, I believe because she grew up in a community like a school of fish, she knows the power of strength in numbers and teamwork. This is what makes her a strong supportive character.
Compared to other support champions, Nami is a jack of stats; she’s strong but not focusing on one particular stat. This reflects her ability to adapt in life and in battle. Nature rewards those who can adapt to survive and Nami is very aware of this. She knows not to stay on one path or mindset and goes with the flow. There are times where she may need to go more on an aggressive offense and other times she needs to focus on disengaging a fight before all of her teammates fall.
The Marai only know about the surface world through old stories passed down for centuries. This doesn’t stop Nami from going above and beyond. It’s safe to assume she joined the League of Legends to seek the attention of the moonstone bearer and/or gain more information about getting the stone herself. While the tradeoff didn’t go exactly as planned, she bears no grudge against any of the surface races. If she did, she would become more of an aggressive warrior who mocks them. There is little to no sense of arrogance when she laughs or speaks. Instead she keeps her cool in battle.
Nami, if you may pardon the pun, becomes a bit of a fish out of water when she explores the surface. She finds feet and air breathing to be strange but she keeps an open mind for the most part. While she’s at a disadvantage compared to other champions when it comes to life on land, it doesn’t stop Nami from learning more about in order to adapt.
Even though Nami has the pressure of saving the Marai from impending doom, she still shows a playful side. As small girl, Nami was able to live a relatively happy childhood because she was away from the constant fights in Runeterra. I’ve figured since the Marai show a level of sentience equal to humans but still kept their ties with nature, they realize the significance of play in developing minds. She might tell an opponent to "soak it up" as she splashes water in their direction, even smile and playfully laugh as she attacks. With her staff, she twirls it as part of her dance. She’s shown to have an affinity towards other ocean or water-dwelling champions. Also she often uses ocean and fish-based puns to joke around. If she’s left idle, she may do backflips for fun. As a joke, she even summons a trio of mini sharks that jump out of the water at her command.
AU Deviation: Since BNW!Nami doesn’t have powerful moves like her original canon, she must rely on her stronger than average stats and her egg move, Brine, to survive. While living in the colony was peaceful, she’s more than aware of the laws of nature and how cruel they can be if you’re not ready for it. Despite her cheery nature, deep down she is frustrated by the lack of information about how to find the relic. She is not ashamed about being a Feebas and does take offense if she is not taken seriously. At the same time, she finds living among humans to be a little overwhelming because living on land is strange compared to living underwater.
Canon Abilities: Link for game specifics but her main abilities as follows:
Surging Tides: Her passive ability in game. When Nami’s abilities hits an ally or herself, they receive a small speed boost for a brief period of time.
Aqua Prison: Nami sends an area-of-effect bubble which damages and briefly suspends enemies in that area.
Ebb and Flow: Nami shoots a stream of water at a Champion (aka a player character) which either heals allies or damages enemies. It can bounce from champion to champion in a short range, up to three Champions.
Tidecaller’s Blessing: This is Nami’s main buffing spell. This grants either her or an alley additional damage when they use a basic attack and it also slows the target for a brief period of time.
Tidal Wave: Nami’s ultimate attack. She sends a long range tidal wave that damages enemies, knocks them out and slows them.
Despite living underwater until this point, Nami is able to function just fine on land. In game, she has a constant puddle of water to help her move. While we don’t have all the details of her journey into the depths, it’s safe to say she’s got the ability to survive the pressure of the deep sea.
Enlightened Abilities: Nami will be a shiny level 8 Feebas Shifter with Water typing.
Move Set:
Splash
Brine (egg move)
Swift Swim (ability)
Since Feebas need a Prism Scale to evolve into Milotic, I’m hoping to have her obtain one in time. Nami will have some webbing between her fingers with a blue tint to them. Her sides, just under her ribs, will have the same black marks that run along Feebas’s belly. When she evolves into a Milotic, she’ll gain a tail in the same style and pattern. Her hair will have two yellow streaks to mimic the head-fins.Whether in rain or submerged in water, she’ll gain speed because of her swift swim ability.
I’d like her to have a staff like her canon one with water type. With it she can conjure up and send a jet of salt water for her Brine attack.
Starter Pokémon: Poliwag (Move set: Water Sport, Water Pulse)
Notes/Special Considerations: I’m leaving the actual relic/macguffin as unattainable as of now or else Nami is going to go straight back home. Also would it be possible for her to carry a big pearl around with her? It won’t have any enlightened powers.
SAMPLESFirst-Person: To what lengths would you go to rescue your allies if they were lost in the wilderness? Any and all if possible but there will be times where you can’t always be there to save them. I know that sounds harsh, but I trust my allies to be able to survive out there too.
A human has attacked a wild Pokémon who retaliates in defense. How do you respond and whom do you defend? First of all, break up the fight and get both sides of the story. Still at the same time, I’d defend the Pokemon more. It’s because we do give fair warning that they’re in our territory and they can leave now without injury.
You plunge into the depths of the Old City. What is it that you seek from the past? Treasure, technology, wisdom?: I’d like to find a clue about the relic that’ll protect my clan. Somehow, I don’t expect to find it immediately. Back home, it’s so worn down, it’s hard to distinguish what it is exactly. The elders apparently forgot what it looked like too. If the relic isn’t available, maybe another method of protection.
What area do you seek to explore? The peaceful forest, in search of new, previously overlooked discoveries; the uncharted caves, in search of the unknown; or the wildest of mountain terrain, in search of danger, adventure, and thrills? Why isn’t the ocean included in this? Afraid to get your feet wet? Okay, for a more serious answer though, I suppose the caves. I’ve seen my fair share of such places while trying to get the pearl.
Third-Person:Feet are strange. Standing and walking seemed easy enough to her but she still had a long road ahead of her. Nami had seen humans and land pokemon since her arrival from the ocean but didn’t expect to be on a pair of feet herself. At first she wobbled on her new legs and even ate some sand in the process. In a few hours of hard practice, she mastered standing and walking.
Nami never expected her life to take such a turn like this. She only wanted to save her fellow Feebas. Maybe the rest of her clan was right and she was indeed their Tidecaller--their hero and bringer of hope. While to the clan that would mean something, it meant nothing to the world beyond. She was indeed the tiny fish in the big sea now.
After some questioning with the locals in the neighboring towns, she eventually found her way to Union. She took a deep breath to calm herself and repeating to herself, "I can do this." The Signal Tower left her breathless as she never saw a structure like this before. Nature had its own wonders but perhaps humans had its own achievements to admire as well.
